Canada eTA

Over the past few years, Canada has remained a popular destination for travellers visiting for tourism, family visits, and short-term business activities. To support safe and efficient entry, the Government of Canada introduced the electronic travel authorisation system, a passport-linked electronic approval that allows eligible travellers to visit Canada by air without applying for a Visitor Visa.

The purpose of the Canada travel authorisation is to strengthen border security, streamline entry, and support tourism and business travel by screening visitors before they arrive.

What is Canada eTA?

Canada eTA is an electronic entry approval issued by the Government of Canada that allows eligible travellers from visa-exempt countries to board a flight to Canada. It is electronically linked to your passport and is typically valid for up to five years, or until your passport expires, whichever occurs first.

Since 2016, this travel authorisation has been a mandatory requirement for eligible passport holders travelling to Canada by air. It is not required for entry by land or sea. Travellers need to obtain approval before departure, because airlines may not allow boarding without a valid travel authorisation.

Canada eTA - Key Features
  • Electronic Approval: No physical document or stamp is issued. The approval is provided electronically.

  • Linked to Passport: It is electronically connected to the passport used during the application.

  • Validity Period: Typically valid for up to five(5) years or until the passport expires, whichever occurs first.

  • Multiple Entries: Allows multiple visits to Canada during the validity period, with each stay usually permitted for up to six months, subject to border authority decisions.

Why is the Canada eTA Necessary?

The Canada eTA system serves several important purposes:

  • Border Security and Entry Control: It supports border security by allowing authorities to review eligible travellers before they arrive in Canada by air.

  • Simplified Travel Process: It supports a faster and more efficient entry experience at Canadian airports by confirming eligibility before departure.

  • Support for Tourism and Business Travel: It makes it easier for eligible travellers to visit Canada for tourism or short-term business activities through a streamlined process.

  • Time and Cost Efficiency: Eligible passport holders can obtain authorisation more quickly compared to traditional application processes.

Important Note: Airlines may refuse boarding, and entry may be denied, if a traveller does not hold a valid eTA or appropriate documentation before travelling to Canada by air.

Canada eTA Categories Based on Travel Purpose

The Canada eTA is a single electronic travel authorisation for short-term visits by travellers from visa-exempt countries who are flying to Canada. While there is only one eTA, the purpose of travel may vary depending on the traveller’s plans.

Most travellers are normally allowed to stay for up to six months per visit, subject to the border authorities’ decision.

  • Business Visits
For short-term business activities such as meetings, conferences, negotiations, or events, without entering the Canadian labour market. Validity conditions are the same as for tourism travel.

  • Transit Through Canada
For travellers passing through Canada to another destination by air. An eTA is required for transit if arriving by air from a visa-exempt country. The authorisation validity remains the same as a standard eTA.

Important Note: For longer stays, employment, or study in Canada, travellers must apply for the appropriate permits or visas instead of an eTA.
